General Summary
The cannon is a single target defense that deals moderate damage. It is the first defensive structure that a player builds at the beginning of their adventure in Clash of Clans. The player is required to build one during the tutorial.
- Cannons are cheap and quick to upgrade at lower levels.
- The cannons can fire at any ground Troops, such as Barbarians and Archers, but they cannot fire at any air Troops, such as Dragons, Balloons, etc.
- Starting at level 7, which requires Town Hall 6, the Master Builder can equip a Cannon to resemble a Double Cannon, if available. This also requires that at least one Double Cannon in the Builder's Base be level 4 or higher, which requires Builder's Workshop 4.
Defensive Strategy
- The cannons have a high rate of fire and decent range, making them an ideal deterrent for wall breakers (who have very low hit points).
- Cannons are very useful to prevent the Giants from attacking other defenses.
- You can defend mortars and mage towers by placing them within cannon range.
- Make sure cannons are placed within range of air defenses, because cannons cannot target air units (or at least within range of an archer tower or wizard tower, which can also target air units) .
- They can also synergize well with air defenses specifically.
- Upgrade these structures and mortars first at low levels, as they are one of your main ground defenses. They are also quite inexpensive and are among the most common defensive structures available, making them a good initial investment for defense.
- As the description implies, they are best used for point defenses, so putting them slightly off your base would be effective.
- In Town Hall 5 (and higher), placing two Cannons close to each other could be of great help, as sometimes players mostly try to go for the Archer Towers using Giants, which turns them into shotguns. , thus killing the Giants easily.
- An equipped Cannon is highly ineffective against swarms of smaller troops due to its slow rate of fire. It can deal a lot of damage, but most of its cannonball shots are useless as smaller troops are killed in few hits and it is easily overwhelmed due to its slow re-aiming time.
Offensive Strategy
- Cannons are one of the defensive buildings that cannot attack air units. This makes them easy prey for balloons, dragons or minions if they are not within range of air defenses, archer towers, catapults (in ground and air mode), Teslas or mage towers.
- Cannons can only damage one unit at a time. This makes it very easy to overwhelm them with large groups of Archers or Barbarians. They can also be overwhelmed with higher health units like Giants or PEKKAs.
- Strong solo troops, such as the Super Barbarian or the Valkyrie, can destroy a Cannon even when surrounded by garbage buildings if it has little support.
Improvement differences (need to review the words)
- Cannons undergo major visual changes at levels 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20. Both the barrel and the support platform increase in size at almost all levels.
- When initially constructed, it consists of a short dark metal barrel mounted on a four-legged circular wooden platform.
- At level 2, the base receives a wooden stabilizer attached to the legs with ropes.
- At level 3, the leg stabilizer becomes more robust. The base itself rotates 45 degrees within the 3x3 square (apparently to accommodate later and larger barrel improvements).
- At level 4, the canyon receives two decorative latitudinal ridges, one in the middle of the canyon and one at the rear. The platform leg stabilizer is eliminated in favor of a larger, sturdier main support platform with much shorter legs.
- At level 5, the wooden legs are replaced by metal ones and the metal ring on which it pivots widens.
- At level 6, the base receives a pair of what appears to be metal plates bolted to opposite sides of the platform to anchor the barrel more firmly to the swivel mount. The pivot on which it sits is also replaced by metal.
- At level 7, the wooden base is replaced by a white stone platform with four short golden legs. The decorative central ridge of the barrel is adorned with a gold ring.
- At level 8, the other decorative rim that surrounds the rear of the barrel also receives a gold edging, as well as a pair of opposing gold plates that secure it to the platform.
- At level 9, you receive a third gold-rimmed decorative ridge around the muzzle, and two additional thicker gold plates perpendicular to the first pair. The plates also receive a steel bolt with a gold finish on each end.
- At level 10, the cannon is completely gold. The main body of the barrel receives triangular reinforcing plates. The upper part of the base gains some gold spikes that fill in the space that the straps do not cover. The legs of the platform are made of dark metal trimmed in gold with small gold spikes.
- At level 11, the barrel transforms into black metal. The triangular plates get bigger. The ring behind the barrel is made flatter and uses lighter gray metal. The gold spikes on the base are also transformed into black metal and the legs become prominent black glass feet.
- At level 12, it has a hot red ring behind its muzzle. The muzzle goes from being smooth to being plated. The triangular plates acquire an outline that glows orange due to the heat. The gold base strap receives a dark red band and the black metallic spikes are removed. The bases are now black rocks surrounding a red crystal as a base, similar to the base of the level 4 catapult.
- At level 13, the triangular plates take on a more kite-like shape, the orange outline is much more pronounced, and a kite-shaped spike is added between the plates. The barrel is now more elegant and elevated. The barrel appears slightly shorter than the level 12. The barrel is lined with strips attached with gold nails over the hot red ring behind the muzzle. The gold ribbon on the base becomes a dark gray metal and the white part is replaced by red. The black rocks at the base turn golden.
- At level 14, levitate over the lava pool. The triangular plates change to a trapezoidal shape and the rectangular bars at the rear of the Cannon turn gold, the orange outline covers it as well. The hemisphere at the rear also heats up to an orange color. The barrel is much shorter than at level 13. The spiked strips now blend into the Barrel itself, the spikes become pointed, and the ring inside now also glows orange. The inner nose has a silver color that glows a subdued red. The base becomes a white stone structure and a layer of gold cladding that surrounds a pool of lava. In each corner there is a cube from which three golden peaks protrude.
- At level 15, the barrel takes on an octagonal shape with two metal bands around the front of the barrel, with the rear fastened with gold bolts and a small gold ring hanging from a fixture on each side. Between these two metallic bands there is a bright yellow. The rear of the barrel is secured with metal accessories that replace the trapezoidal plates. The canyon itself is much larger. The base acquires some pieces of black stone in the corners that replace the spikes and golden straps that cover between the corners.
- At level 16, instead of being suspended over a pool of lava, the body is reattached to the base. The band around the muzzle is now even larger and octagonal; the gold studded band is now fully gold and covers the yellow glitter. The kite-shaped skewer and metal accessory have been replaced by skewers. The base now has nailed dark gray metal corners and has a two-step blue floor and gold accents around the corners.
- At level 17, the gold band now has spikes similar to the main body of level 16, while the main body is now ribbed instead of spiked, and the rear of the barrel is also gold. The gold details on the base are more pronounced, and in the corner, gold pentagonal studs replace the normal nail.
- At level 18, the body is now dark turquoise and the barrel has a purple coating. Comet-shaped gold spikes and hardware are back, and the hardware connects the main body and barrel front with a turquoise spike on top. The muzzle is covered with a gold band and under the band it turns purple. The base is now turquoise, the corners the same dark turquoise color of the barrel and the corners acquire similar shoes to those of the hardware. The edges also have what appears to be level 5 walls on their side. The inner barrel glow, most of the kite-shaped spikes, and the base corner bolt all turn to a snow blue metal.
- At level 19, the main body of the cannon has more gold that extends to the muzzle of the cannon. The main body accessories are also given a layer of gold that covers most of them and the tang, the front of the accessory, is sharpened. Comet-shaped peaks are now flatter and more triangular. The bass ring has been made bigger and brighter. The base has spikes on the edges and its feet are larger.
- At level 20, the body is now purple-black. The main body has a thick golden square wave pattern in a groove ring. A fine gold band ring with a small triangle is extended with a green metal with the same pattern. The golden muzzle is covered in a layer of purple-black stone with the inner purple ring of the muzzle turning green, purple-black and glowing green. The base is filled with greenish water. The corners are made of the black-purple stone with gold cladding on it, with the connection seems level 3 walls with a purple tint.
- The appearance of the cannonball changes with level.
- When first built, it is light gray and extremely small.
- At level 2, it gets bigger.
- At level 4, it is even bigger and darker.
- At level 6, acquire spikes everywhere.
- At level 8, it glows a dim yellow.
- At level 10, it is a dodecahedron with a small space between each pentagonal pyramid plate.
- At level 12, the shape does not change, but is bright red with an orange glow around it with flaming particles as it moves.
- At level 13, it is much larger, glows deep yellow, and the fine particles are much more pronounced.
- At level 20, it glows green instead of yellow.
- When equipping the cannon, an additional cannon identical to the original is added. Additionally, the ridges surrounding the canyons (starting at level 7) spread out and appear to surround both canyons, making it appear that two canyons are merging into one. However, the only exception is Cannon level 20, where the two cannons barely touch.
Trivia/Trivia
- When you see your town, the cannons will appear to be aiming at random. However, they will always (generally) be pointing away from City Hall. If the guns (or the Town Hall) are moved, the guns will be instantly oriented to aim away from the new relative location of the Town Hall. This remains true even when Cannons are being upgraded (except that Cannons that are upgraded are always pointed directly away from the Town Hall with no random movement).
- The barrel of the cannon expands slightly each time it fires.
- The Cannon has 20 upgrade levels, the most of any building in the game, if you don't count the separate upgrades for the Gigatorre Tesla and the Infernal Gigatorre in Town Hall.
- Starting with the Air Controller update (see Version History), the build time for the Tier 1 Cannon has been reduced from 1 minute to 10 seconds.
- If the Cannon details are opened immediately after equipping, it will show the DPS as half that of a normal Cannon instead of the burst information. This is probably a bug and is easily fixed by reloading the game.
- The Cannon, along with the Bomber Tower, Mortar, Tesla Tower, Catapult, and Hell Tower are the only defenses to appear in Clash Royale.
